Meet Caleb, a bright 14-year-old who loves technology. He uses a power wheelchair to get around. Along with his parents and two younger sisters, Caleb’s family was selected to receive support from enGAGE in the amount of $15,000. We are grateful to be part of Caleb’s journey to get the transportation he needs. Here’s a bit more about what it means from the first-hand perspective of his parents.
“Our son was born with a muscle disease and has used a power wheelchair since he was six years old. His chair gives him independence and freedom, and we are so proud of the young man he is becoming.
For the past seven years, we’ve transported him by transferring him into a van seat and lifting his power chair inside. It’s a system built out of love and determination—but as he’s grown, so has the weight. These transfers are no longer safe for him or us.
Our van now has over 213,000 miles, and a reliable wheelchair-accessible van is financially out of reach for us. An accessible vehicle will allow him to enter safely in his chair, protect our family from injury, and preserve his independence.
